Yellow

After the group has eaten lunch, everyone
takes their turn drawing. My mother draws
a horse. She says she is feeling strong.
Another woman draws a tooth with blood
because she is feeling pain. Everything wants
to communicate
. I brought daffodils because
they are the opposite of suicide, the undoing
of problem. Mother coats her horse jaundiced.
The woman scribbles in flavin-blue. A yellow-
rumped warbler renders something syrupy
& sparse to mock all human emotion.
A red line of piss ants sedately enters,
departs; their numerical cargo outlines
the only antipathy – unlovely bits of pity.
