The soul of the pig is located
just under the left ear flap.
When the animal is stunned,
in the moments before slaughter,
the soul breaks into many souls
(smaller but equal in value)
and these swarm together
like a minute constellation
in the ear of the pig,
coalescing into a hum
that might (and here the science
becomes uncertain) sound to him
like the flies that attended
his trips to the mud hole
in earlier times, or even possibly
the gurgle of his fellow piglets
in the womb sack.
After slaughter the souls disperse,
becoming perhaps the souls
of newborn infants
in nearby hospitals.
But on this, further research is needed.
